Star Step 5000 SDR

Image
The Star Step 5000 started as a way to automate telescope movement and capture images of the night sky. With the newest update, the project takes a step further: a parallel Yagi antenna has been added to the mount, turning the system into the Star Step 5000 SDR . Now, whenever the telescope locks onto an object and takes a picture, the antenna records wideband radio data from the same part of the sky. Light and radio waves—two different views of the same moment—are gathered together. Looking ahead, I plan to test antennas tuned to specific ranges that matter to radio astronomers, such as bands where hydrogen, pulsars, or other signals can be found. Each new antenna will add another layer to the story the sky is telling, making the project less about a single device and more about exploring how different frequencies reveal different sides of the universe.

Realtime Hackrf SDR Sweep Graph

Image
This graph was produced by a newly created C and Python based program that uses a HackRF One SDR to capture RF spectrum data. Unlike many off-the-shelf SDR applications, it supports full-spectrum plots. The figure shows normalized dB across the FM radio band. This was created over the course of a couple of weeks using libhackrf and qt python graph libraries. The HackRF One supports upto 6GHz+.

Desktop DIY laptop controlled 3-axis CNC Mill 2014-2015

Image
This page describes my DIY laptop controlled 3-axis CNC Mill. It has been an amazing project and a fun build. The below table is a breakdown of costs associated with the project. The Proxxon mill I got was a return with cosmetic damage that was marked down from the original price. I used a stepper motor adapter kit to attach nema-17 motors to the X,Y, and Z controls of the mill. The nema-17 motors work well, but can slow down slightly sometimes. I may upgrade to nema-23 motors for more torque. The laptop I'm using connects to the stepper motor controller board using a parallel cable. The software I am using is Mach 3. So far most of the limitations I have run into are related to software. I have been able to mill metal using g-code. I have used a bit with 0.5 mm diameter and got excellent precision. I have also cut stepper motor mounts out of aluminum and brass using this setup. The Proxxon mill is capable of cutting steel and titanium metal. The control board and power supply a...
